Northolt Driving Test Centre: Routes and the Target Roundabout

Northolt test centre explained — the A312, the Target Roundabout, Western Avenue, and the lane-discipline habits that decide most results here.

Northolt is the test centre used by most of our learners from Ruislip, Greenford, South Harrow and Northolt itself. It has a distinct character, and one landmark that dominates preparation for it.

The Target Roundabout

The large multi-lane roundabout where the A312 meets Western Avenue is the feature most Northolt candidates worry about, and with reason — it is where lane discipline is genuinely tested rather than theoretically tested.

The principles are the ones you already know, applied under more pressure than usual:

The practical answer is repetition. Drive it enough times that lane choice happens before you consciously think about it — that is when it stops absorbing attention you need for everything else.

The other roads that come up

What Northolt tests hardest

Compared with Mill Hill, Northolt is less about hills and more about speed judgement and lane discipline. You are repeatedly asked to move between fast dual carriageway and slow residential roads, and to make lane decisions under time pressure.

Candidates who fail here usually do so for one of two things: hesitating at the Target Roundabout when a gap was clearly available, or failing to adjust speed promptly when leaving the A40 for a residential street.

Preparation that actually works

Ask your instructor to take you through the Target Roundabout from every approach, not just the one you expect. Examiners route candidates through it in different directions, and the lane choice differs each time.

Then do a normal drive around the wider area without focusing on anything in particular. The goal for the final sessions is that no road feels new — familiarity is what frees up the attention that observation faults come from.

On the day

Bring your provisional licence photocard. Arrive around ten minutes early. If you are using our car, the £190 hire includes a warm-up lesson beforehand, which for Northolt we usually spend on the roundabout and the A40 approach so that the two highest-pressure elements are already behind you before the examiner gets in.

Book your first lesson or call 0800 644 5995. Open 7 days, 8am–9pm.
