Is an automatic licence right for you?
An automatic licence (DVSA category B auto) lets you drive any automatic car, including almost every electric and hybrid vehicle on UK roads. It does not allow you to drive a manual. That restriction used to matter a lot. It matters far less now: the majority of new cars sold in the UK are automatic or electric, and manufacturers have committed to phasing out new petrol and diesel models, which are the only reason manual gearboxes still exist in volume.
The honest test is this. If you already know you will be buying or driving an automatic — because it is what your family owns, because you plan to drive electric, or because you need a licence quickly for work — an automatic licence costs you nothing in practice. If you might need to drive a company van, a friend's older car, or you want to hire cars cheaply abroad, manual is the safer long-term choice.
Why automatic learners often need fewer lessons
Clutch control is the single biggest reason beginners stall, roll back on hills and lose confidence early. Remove it and most learners reach test standard in noticeably fewer hours. That is not a promise — it depends entirely on how much you practise and how confident you are behind the wheel — but it is what our instructors see consistently across North-West London.
It matters most in exactly the places our students learn. Harrow-on-the-Hill is a genuinely steep hill start. The A5 Edgware Road runs stop-start for most of the day. Wembley on an event day is bumper to bumper. In an automatic, those situations are about planning and observation. In a manual, they are about planning, observation and not stalling in front of a queue of traffic.
What an automatic lesson with us actually looks like
Your instructor picks you up free of charge from home, work, college or your local station. Early lessons stay on quiet residential roads — around Stonegrove Park in Edgware, the streets behind Pinner Village, the estates off Northolt Road — until moving off, stopping and steering feel automatic to you.
From there you build up to the roads the examiner actually uses: Burnt Oak Broadway, Harrow town centre, the Ruislip and Northolt approach roads, the Mill Hill test routes. By the time you sit your test you will have driven the surrounding area often enough that nothing on the route is a surprise.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are automatic driving lessons more expensive than manual?
No. At JD School of Motoring automatic and manual lessons are both £40 per hour, and the same discounted packages apply to either — 5 hours for £195, 10 hours for £380 and 20 hours for £740. Many driving schools charge a premium for automatic; we do not.
Can I drive a manual car if I pass in an automatic?
No. An automatic licence only covers automatic cars. If you later want to drive a manual you would need to take a further practical test in a manual car — you would not need to retake the theory test.
How many automatic driving lessons will I need?
It depends on how quickly you build confidence and how much private practice you get. The DVSA suggests around 45 hours of professional tuition plus private practice as a UK average across all learners. Automatic learners frequently need fewer. Your instructor will give you an honest estimate after your first two or three lessons.
Do you offer automatic driving lessons in Harrow?

Is the driving test different in an automatic car?
The test format is identical — same manoeuvres, same independent driving section, same duration. The only difference is that you will not be assessed on gear changes, and the licence you receive is restricted to automatic vehicles.
