Driving Test Car Hire — Use Our Car for Your Practical Test

Taking your test in a car you have never driven is a bad idea. Hire ours — the same car you learned in — for £190, including a warm-up lesson before the examiner gets in.

If you have been practising in a family car or have no car available on test day, you need a vehicle that meets DVSA requirements. Our test car hire gives you the car you already know, fully insured and compliant, plus a warm-up lesson immediately beforehand so you arrive at the test centre already driving well rather than cold.

What you get

What £190 includes

Use of our dual-controlled car for the practical test itself, insured and compliant with DVSA vehicle requirements. A warm-up lesson beforehand — typically an hour on the local roads and test routes so you are settled before the examiner joins you. Your instructor drives you to and from the test centre.

The DVSA test fee is separate and paid directly to the DVSA when you book your test.

Why the warm-up lesson matters more than people expect

The most common avoidable test failures are not complex manoeuvres. They are observation errors made in the first ten minutes, by candidates who arrived cold and were still settling in.

A warm-up lesson removes that. By the time the examiner sits down you have already been driving for an hour, on the roads immediately around the test centre, with your nerves at their lowest point of the day rather than their highest.

Which test centres we cover

Our students most often test at Mill Hill, Northolt, Borehamwood and Watford, and our instructors know the routes around all of them. We also cover Barnet, Greenford and Uxbridge depending on instructor availability.

If you already have a test booked at a centre not listed, call us — we can usually still help, and it is worth asking rather than assuming.

A note on your car versus ours

You can use your own car for the test provided it meets DVSA rules — properly insured for the test, taxed, MOT'd, fitted with L-plates, with a passenger rearview mirror and a working speedometer, and with no warning lights showing. Many private insurers do not cover a driving test by default, so check specifically rather than assuming.

Our car removes all of that uncertainty and is already set up correctly. If you have learned with us, it is also the car your muscle memory is calibrated to — clutch bite, brake feel, mirror positions and blind spots are all where you expect them.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to hire your car for the driving test?

Test car hire is £190. That covers use of our dual-controlled car for the practical test plus a warm-up lesson beforehand. The DVSA test fee is paid separately, directly to the DVSA.

Can I use my own car for the driving test?

Yes, if it meets DVSA requirements: valid insurance that specifically covers a driving test, tax and MOT, L-plates, an additional interior rearview mirror for the examiner, a working speedometer and no dashboard warning lights. Check your insurance covers the test explicitly — many policies do not by default.

Do I have to have learned with you to hire your test car?

No, but we will want a lesson or two beforehand so your instructor can confirm you are comfortable in the car and at test standard. Putting someone in an unfamiliar car for a test with no preparation does not serve anyone.

Which test centres do you cover?

Most commonly Mill Hill, Northolt, Borehamwood and Watford, with Barnet, Greenford and Uxbridge subject to instructor availability. If your test is booked elsewhere, call 0800 644 5995 — we can often still help.
